Considering energy prices are increasing at the moment, we know that you do not want to be spending more on electricity than you need to! The problem is that a lot of people end up wasting energy without realising they are doing so.
Let’s take a look at some of the ways you may be wasting energy without realising it:
Ignoring power hours – Many power businesses provide discounted rates after a specific time of the day, for instance, after 8.00 pm. So, to reduce energy costs, do not only consider how you power things in your home but when you do so! A good idea here is to schedule your dishwashing and laundry so that you’re not using a lot of energy during those peak hours of the day.
Fridge gazing – We all love a good fridge gaze, don’t we? Especially those of us who work from home! How many times do you find yourself opening the fridge and staring inside aimlessly for five minutes before you decide you don’t want anything? Not only are you torturing yourself, but you are wasting electricity in the process!
You don’t make the most of eco-friendly power - There are so many different ways you can make eco switches around your home. Simply changing your boiler to a newer, more energy-efficient model will make a massive difference. Of course, you can also look into renewable energy sources, like solar power. There are a number of different government grants and schemes in place to encourage people to take these options up, so check them out before you go ahead and make an investment.
Always running hot laundry loads – A lot of people do not realise that 90 per cent of the total power used to do the laundry is for heating the water! That’s a lot of power, right? Therefore, if you cut out the hot water, you can reduce your laundry expenses considerably. So, time for a bit of tactical washing. We would recommend reserving your hot water washes for those tough stains only, and wash everything else with cold water. It will make a bigger difference than you realise.
Plugging but not playing – Surely, you didn’t think you would be able to read this post and get away with this one, did you? You still use electricity if you plug something in and you don’t play it, be it your video console or computer. So, take the plug out, switch the socket off, and you will save a good bit of money over time.
